RESORTS AND TOWNS

Baku

The old part of Baku is a historical and architectural reserve, often called “Baku Acropolis”. 70 km south of Baku is the largest in the CIS cluster of rock paintings Kobystan (Gobustan), which includes more than 4,000 rock sites, caves, fortresses and burial grounds. The village of Surakhany with the temple complex of fire worshippers Ateshgah lies 30 km from Baku. The Shikhovo balneological resort built on hydrogen sulphide springs is also interesting.

Guba

Guba is the capital of the ancient Cuban Khanate 165 km north of Baku. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the country with a 16th century fortress, various mosques and famous Cuban carpets.

Shemakha

Shemakhy is one of the oldest and most interesting cities of the country, located 130 km west of the capital. The main attraction of the city is the Giz-Galasy fortress – the last refuge of the Shirvanshahs. Nowadays it is a recognized center of winemaking and carpet weaving.

Sheki

Sheki is located 380 km west of Baku, near the Georgian border. Many finds on its territory are more than 2500 years old. Sheki has a huge number of historical sites, mosques, and a museum of local history. The city is also known as a center of silk production and a climatic resort.

Lankaran

Lankaran is located in the very south-east of the country, on the border with Iran. It is one of the best balneo-climatic resorts in the country. The city itself is interesting with Lenkoran Fortress (XVIII century) and Kichik-Bazar Mosque (XIX century).

Talysh

Talysh is a district located in the southeast of Azerbaijan on the border with Iran. It pleases guests with beautiful landscapes of green mountains, cut through gorges with rushing rivers, numerous thermal and mineral springs. The famous Arkevan hot mineral springs flow near Jalilabad.

Nakhichevan

Nakhchivan is one of the oldest cities in Azerbaijan. Its main attractions are the mausoleums of Yusuf-ibn-Kuseyir (1161) and Momine-Khatun (1186), as well as the Literary and Historical Museums, the Art Gallery, the fortress of Gaur-Kala and the famous Khudaferin bridges over the Araks (XII-XIII centuries).

Ordubad

In Ordubad are interesting Juma and Dilber mosques (XVII-XVIII cc.), madrasahs, khan’s palace (XVIII-XIX cc.) and many medieval buildings united in the state historical and architectural reserve. In 60 km to the south of Ordubad on the mountain Gemigaya (Kemchigaya) there is an area of concentration of rock petroglyphs (3-2 millennia BC).

TRANSPORT

There are four international airports in Azerbaijan. The main air gateway of the country is Heydar Aliyev International Airport, located 25 km from Baku. The airport is a modern and large air hub, receiving aircraft from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk and other Russian cities, as well as Minsk, Tbilisi, Prague, Vienna, London, Milan and other European capitals. You can get from the airport to Baku by shuttle bus № 116, running every 30 minutes. There is also a cab dispatch desk in the airport’s arrival hall.

Major international airports operate in the north of the country in Gabala, in the west in Ganja, in the southeast in Lenkoran and in the exclave of Nakhichevan. Each of the above airports is connected by regular direct flights to Moscow.

There are 2,195 km of railroad tracks running through Azerbaijan. The tracks connect Azerbaijan with Georgia, Ukraine and Russia. The largest railroad transportation hub is the Baku railway station. Major cities are connected to the nearest settlements by suburban electric trains.

Baku has an international port. There is a passenger ferry service to the ports of Russia, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan.

Azerbaijan has a developed network of highways. It is possible to travel between the cities of the republic by buses, shuttle buses and cabs. There are bus stations in every major city, and bus stations in smaller settlements. Buses run according to the schedule, and shuttle buses depart as they fill up.

Urban public transportation in Azerbaijan is provided by buses and cabs. There are official and non-social cab drivers. Cabs in Azerbaijan mostly operate without a meter, payment is made by agreement. Baku has a subway, represented by two lines with 32 stations.

USEFUL TIPS

At the moment the legislation of Azerbaijan does not restrict smoking in public places. But in some places such a ban may take place.

Azerbaijan is a secular state. European style of dress is widespread in the country. Along with restaurants of national cuisine, which do not serve pork dishes, there are a large number of restaurants of European, Chinese, Russian and Ukrainian cuisine.

At the same time, foreigners should avoid mass gatherings of people during religious holidays, as well as commemorative dates such as the Khojaly tragedy and the Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis.

WHAT TO DO

Breakfast in Baku Old Town

Start your day with a traditional Azerbaijani breakfast while strolling through the cobbled streets of the Old Town. Treat yourself to original egg dishes, for example, tomadom-chikhirtma – a combination of scrambled eggs with tomatoes. The dish should be eaten with freshly baked hot bread in a tandoor. Sweet thick honey, country cheeses, yogurt and aromatic tea are served to the table.

Discover the ancient city of Sheki

Surrounded by mountainous forests, this city in northwestern Azerbaijan is a recent UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend a day strolling the streets that keep the spirit of the Silk Road alive, admiring the city’s architecture and its buildings with pointed roofs and intricate brickwork, reflecting the trading and handicraft past of this corner of the country. Check out mosques and museums, caravanserais and palaces, and don’t forget to taste the famous Shekinah baklava.

Ancient Churches of Azerbaijan

Long before Islam spread to Azerbaijan with the Arab conquest in the 7th century, Christianity was widespread here. In some regions of Azerbaijan, the canons of Christianity were faithful even in the Middle Ages. One of such regions is the village of Nij, where the Udins, representatives of the oldest people professing Christianity, still gather every Sunday in the restored church of the XVII century. There are many more ancient temples in this area, a visit to which will help you to get acquainted with the historical heritage of the country.

Take a dip in the healing oil

About an hour’s drive from Ganja is Naftalan, a resort town famous for its healing oil, which has been used here for centuries to treat all sorts of diseases. Treatment usually involves daily oil baths for at least a week in one of Naftalan’s numerous health centers.

Shrouded in myths and legends, the Caucasus Mountains have for centuries attracted intrepid travelers and explorers from all over the world. MAIN ATTRACTIONS

Giz Galasy Maiden Tower

Giz Galasy Tower is rightfully called the most mysterious monument in Baku. It is located on the territory of Icheri Sheher Fortress. The uniqueness of Giz Galasy architecture lies in the fact that the tower is located on the ledge of a large rock. A gray lime cylinder was used as a building material. The height of the fortress reaches 28 meters and its diameter is 16.5 meters.

Shirvanshahs Palace

The Palace of Shirvanshahs was built for three centuries. The sights of Azerbaijan include this architectural complex, which includes a courtyard, a mosque and a tomb. It even found a place for a bathhouse and a mausoleum of Bakuvi.

Muhammad Mosque

In close proximity to the famous Maiden Tower is the Muhammad Mosque. The estimated year of construction is 471. The works were carried out by order of Muhammad ibn Abu Bakr. According to legend, the mosque was built on the place where the Temple of Fire used to be. It was here that local residents held the defense against the invasion wars of Peter the Great.

Gobustan reserve
